In the Scriptures Jesus told a parable about the man who sold all he had in order to purchase a pearl of great price.
Christ said, “…Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross,:34) The word “deny” literally means “to forget oneself, lose sight of oneself and one’s own interests.”
Why is it important to forsake all and follow Him? It is not a duty. He is the Pearl of great price. Lord, to whom else can we go? You alone are eternal Life.
Leslie Ludy says, ” This is normal Christianity. Radical self-denial, self-sacrifice and self-abandonment. Completely forgetting about self and self-interest, and willingly and gladly pouring out our own lives for the glory of our King. We are called to far more than most of us ever dream or imagine. What does this radical life of abandon to Christ look like on a practical level? It is not about following a formula, but about absolute obedience to the Spirit of Jesus Christ. It’s about laying down selfish pursuits and becoming consumed only with serving and loving our King.”
A.W. Tozer, in The Pursuit of God said, “David’s life was a torrent of spiritual desire, and his psalms ring with the cry of the seeker and the glad shout of the finder. Paul confessed the mainspring of his life to be his burning desire after Christ. ‘That I may know Him,’ was the goal of his heart, and to this he sacrificed everything.”
We are largely a spectator society. We watch television, sports and other people at the mall. We enjoy watching viral videos of people who dance like no one is watching as we sit on our couches and go along our passive ways. We may see someone who has a passion for Christ, but if we are honest, there is very little fire in our own furnace. We are largely unmoved.
Why? I believe one reason is that we have taken little time to dwell on the love of God. The Scriptures say “We love Him because He first loved us.” Our love is a response to what He has done and continues to do for us. Please understand that as I am writing, it is also to myself. It is not as though I have already arrived. But thank God my heart is headed in the right direction.
God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16).
For pure love of us Christ Jesus, who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross! (Philippians 2:6-8)
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knew should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)
We may have an incredible resurrection love with Him who has life in Himself. If we are willing. The keys are obedience and faith.
Let us pray for one another that this will become a reality.
